Tobacco tax increase

The Customs and Excise (Tobacco Products Budget Measures) Amendment Bill was recently passed and this law will see four annual 10 per cent increases in excise tax on tobacco, the first of which takes effect on 1 January 2013.

Latest smoking data

The latest data shows 18 per cent of New Zealand adults were current smokers in 2011/12, down from 20 per cent in 2006/07.
